Layer: Building Footprints (ID: 61)

Name: Building Footprints

Display Field: COMMENTS

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: WHAT: This dataset contains polygon building footprints covering Mesa County, Colorado, as they existed in spring 2015. Each polygon represents a structure identified from aerial imagery. The dataset is countywide in extent and is a single point-in-time snapshot — it has not been updated since the original delivery and does not reflect development, demolition, or other changes that have occurred since 2015.SOURCE & METHODOLOGY: Source footprints were produced by an aerial photography contractor hired by Mesa County, who applied a digital classification model to spring 2015 aerial imagery to identify and extract building footprints. The completed dataset was delivered to Mesa County, who in turn provided it to the City of Grand Junction as a one-time hand-off. No further processing, QA, or review was performed by the City before publication.KEY ATTRIBUTES: TYPE (describes the type of building the polygon represents) and SQ_FT (square footage of the footprint) are the only two fields actively populated and intended for use. Other fields in the schema exist but are largely empty or unreliable and should not be queried or relied upon.UPDATE CYCLE: Not on a recurring update cycle. The dataset was a one-time delivery from Mesa County in 2015. Any future updates would originate from Mesa County, not the City of Grand Junction.KNOWN LIMITATIONS: This dataset reflects 2015 conditions and does not include buildings constructed, modified, or demolished since spring 2015 — a material limitation given the age of the data. The footprints were extracted via automated digital classification from aerial imagery, and positional accuracy was not independently verified. The classification model produced false positives in some cases — for example, parked semi-trucks and trailers were sometimes captured as building footprints. Most attribute fields beyond TYPE and SQ_FT are unpopulated or unreliable. Because of the age and known errors, users should contact the GIS Division before relying on this data for any decision-making purpose.CONTACT: City of Grand Junction GIS Division. For data questions or to report errors, email gis@gjcity.org. Because this dataset originated with Mesa County, questions about underlying methodology or any potential refresh may need to be directed there.
